Crossing Scapa Flow over the Churchill Barriers we arrive on the mainland of Orkney and you will have time to spend in Kirkwall, where you have a few hours to explore St Magnus Cathedral, museum or Bishop's Palace ruins before travelling to Stromness and enjoying a delicious dinner on your first night in Orkney.

Yesnaby Cliffs at Sandwick are a must to see on our journey - giant sea stacks and cliffs offer stunning views out to the North Sea. We then visit the Neolithic village of Skara Brae; 5000 years old and still standing to this day. Explore the village here and its new visitor centre before we travel north to see the Earl's Palace at Birsay and the Broch of Gurness - a well-preserved iron age village perched on the tip of the mainland overlooking Rousay. Explore the visitor centre before we return to the hotel in Stromness for dinner and entertainment.

This morning you can enjoy time to yourself in Stromness, where there is shops, Pier Art Gallery and Museum. In the afternoon we travel to the nearby stone circles of Brodgar & Stenness, and the Ness of Brodgar which lie to the north of the Orphir Hills.  Also Maeshowe, the finest chambered tomb in Western Europe was raided by the Vikings in the 12th century, houses the largest collection of runic inscriptions to be found in any one place in the world.
