Excursions

Wednesday

Enjoy your journey northwards to Aberdeen where you will be welcomed onto the Northlink Ferry departing this evening for the overnight sailing to Lerwick at 1900. Have dinner onboard this evening and enjoy your ferry crossing to iconic Shetland Isles.

Thursday

This morning after your full Scottish breakfast, disembark the ship and be joined by your guide for the first day to explore Shetland. Lerwick is where we begin our journey. Here you have time to explore the Shetland Museum & Archives which give fascinating insights into the islanders lives throughout the centuries. We also visit Fort Charlotte, a fortification built to defend against Dutch & French warships in the 1660's. We travel to nearby Clickimin Broch, the remains of an Iron Age building built over 2000 years ago, many walls surviving to this day and a great testament to the people who built this magnificent structure. In the afternoon our coach takes us a tour of the Mainland, visiting the Isles of West Burra & Trondra, some of the most beautiful beaches here & finally Scalloway – former capital of the isle.  Later we check-into the Brae Hotel for our 1st evening on Shetland, and enjoy a delicious 3 course dinner this evening.

Friday

After breakfast this morning our guide joins us to tell tales Shetland as we visit the Isles of Yell & Unst. Crossing on the ferry from Toft we arrive on Yell, and visit the Old Ha Museum & Tearoom before travelling along the isle to Unst – the UK’s most northernly island. Explore this beautiful gem which has remnants from the Vikings who lived here, and boasts over 50 longhouse sites – more than in Scandinavia! Explore the Viking Unst Project before we visit Muness Castle before returning to the mainland through Yell and back to Brae in time for dinner this evening.

Saturday

Enjoy a hearty breakfast in the Brae Hotel before joining the coach and exploring the island. We journey south to visit the prehistoric Norse settlement of Jarlshof, spanning over 3000 years of history and including longhouses, Iron Age broch and medieval farmhouses. After time here we visit the Shetland Croft House Museum. This is a typical thatched croft house of the 19th century fully restored with traditional materials.  Enjoy your evening meal in the Brae Hotel and your last night on the magical Shetland Isles.

Sunday

A Full Scottish breakfast is served this morning, and we depart the Brae Hotel for our last day touring the Isle. Passing by the scenic point of Mavis Grind and through the north of the mainland we pass by the unspoilt beaches to Eshaness sea cliffs, which offer amazing views over the nearby inlets. There are also many sea caves and caverns here, one of which was declared the largest in Britain. Later we have time in Lerwick at leisure before we say farewell to the Shetland Isles and board our ferry back to Aberdeen for the overnight sailing.  Dinner is provided on board this evening.
